And Mary hears a yes from Jesus about the wine shortage at Cana but in most translations He is saying no. Except in Young’s Literal and in the Latin Vulgate which keeps the literal also. Mary feared Jesus getting arrested if He miraculously produced wine but her empathy for the couple came first. But Jesus sensed the fear in her face and in her voice as she mentioned the wine shortage and he literally says a rare idiom…. “ What to me and to you, woman, my hour (to die) is not yet come.” That’s why Mary heard a yes. He read her worry….He read the room. P.S. Gynai woman was a tender term at that time in history. Watch Jesus and two angels use it toward Mary Magdalene as she weeps near the tomb of Jesus….then a little later, Jesus uses her name. But when she was weeping, Jesus and separately the two angels used woman….our equivalent would be dearest. Now rewrite Jn.2:4 again…” what to me and to you, dearest, my hour (to suffer and die) is not yet come.”…ie….of course I’ll solve this wine problem….
